WON Big Fish Challenge Tournament Rules

  • Note – these rules are subject to revision by our tournament committee. 
  • 10 weeks – Friday, June 29th – Monday, September 6th
  • 6 Eligible Species
    • White Seabass
    • Yellowtail
    • Tuna
    • Bonito / Barracuda
    • Lingcod
    • Halibut
  • There will be weekly winners in each of the fish species for 10 weeks straight, and also an overall winner in each species for the entire derby ( See Prizes tab).
  • Cost of entry is $10 per species or $40 for all six species and anglers must sign up one calendar day prior to fishing.
  • Entries should be weighed at the offcial weigh stations litsed here:

  • Anglers who are not entered cannot give their fish to a registered contestant for weighing and submission – only registered participants may weigh fish and submit entries.
  • Anglers can also sign up for different species on different dates at $10 per specie.
  • You may weigh multiple fish per week. (revised rule effective week 4)
  • In the case of a tie, either in a week or overall, the first fish submitted will be the winner.
  • Anglers can only weigh one fish, per specie, per trip. As an example anglers can weigh one yellowtail, one tuna and one dorado per trip but cannot weigh three yellowtail, three tuna and three dorado per trip.
  • It is the responsibility of the angler and not the weigh station to determine what fish to weigh.
  • Fish can only be weighed once and will need to be weighed at designated coastal weigh stations from Santa Barbara to San Diego.
  • Fish must be weighed at an official tournament weigh station no later than 24hrs. after returning to port.
  • It is the sole responsibility of the angler to submit his entry on WONBIGFISH.com
  • To submit an entry, the angler will upload a photo and specific information about their catch on WONBIGFISH.com. This photo must be taken at an official weigh station. Using the tournament weigh station board provided, pertinent catch information, including angler name, date, fish species and weight must be readily visible within the submitted photograph. This information will also be uploaded to the tournament website by the angler along with his photo.
  • In the event that an official tournament weigh station board is not available, weigh slips will also be available at each official weigh station and can be used in place of the official tournament weigh station boards.
  • The eligible waters are no further north than Point Conception (34.44811 degrees north) and no further south than Punta Colonet (31.06755 degrees south). There is not a western boundary within tournament waters.
  • Trip duration must not exceed 72 continuous hours and commercial passenger trips of greater than 3 days duration are ineligible.
  • Cut-off for weekly entries is 11:59 PM. The cut-off for week 1 is Thursday, June 30th at 11:59 PM…

      • Week 3: Friday, July 14th – Thursday, July 20th

      • Week 4: Friday, July 21th – Thursday, July 27st

      • Week 5: Friday, July 28nd – Thursday, August 3rd

      • Week 6: Friday, August 4th– Thursday, August 10th

      • Week 7: Friday, August 11th – Thursday, August 17th

      • Week 8: Friday, August 18th – Thusday, August 24h

      • Week 9: Friday, August 25th -  Thursday, August 31st

      • Week 10: Friday, September  1st - Thursday September 7th

  • W.O.N. reserves the right to exclude and ban anyone from the contest who is suspected of cheating. Cheating in a fishing tournament is a criminal offense punishable by law.
  • Once the tournament starts entry fees are not refundable.
  • In the event of a dispute all anglers may be subject to a polygraph test at WON’s sole discretion. Refusal to submit to such a test will result in disqualification from the tournament and all unawarded cash and prizes.
  • The final cash and prize winners will be responsible for paying all state and federal taxes resulting from their winnings. We will make efforts to contact all winners by the contact information they provide online and other reasonable means, but if we are unable to contact them regarding delivery of their winnings, they will forfeit them at the end of six months and they will go to the person in the number two position.
